What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants is a fancy way of saying artificial replacements teeth which contain artificial roots and all. The implanted tooth can come in a single piece, two piece or three piece variations. The 3 pieces of an implant is known as the root, abutment and crown respectively.

The root of the implant is made up of titanium and this is what goes into your jaw bone and secures your tooth. The abutment usually comes next as the connecting piece to the crown above. Lastly, the crown tops off the implant, providing you with a functioning, lifelike tooth. The one piece implant is usually made with the crown, abutment and screw fused together while two-three piece implants have the crown and/or abutment separated.

The implant procedure starts by securing the titanium root to your mouth. The root then fuses with your bone, providing a reliable, sturdy support. These implants are made with the same special surgical grade titanium used in hip, knee and other replacements. If you would like to learn more about how titanium adheres to bone and why is it so biocompatible you can click on the link at the end of the page which will lead to a national library of medicine article that goes into the specifics.

At Sherwood Dental, we are happy to offer an array of dental implants with specialty unmatched in our area. This is further enhanced by using industry-leading technology to ensure a more personalized, precise and accessible procedure. Dr. Ge has an extensive background in guided implant technology having sucessfully completed many difficult implant cases. Her expertise allows us to provide the best implant service to ensure the best results for our patients.

The guided implant procedure starts with 3D scan of your mouth. This can help determine the viability of a dental implant, whether or not that is the best option for you. If successful we design the implant

digitally to ensure a secure and tight fit, perfectly crafted for you mouth. This allows us to ensure that the implant does not fall out, removing the guesswork and guarenteeing the best results, every time.

The benefit of 3D guided implants is that we can map out the structures of your mouth beforehand. This allows us to avoid sensitive areas like nerves, sinuses and plan accordingly to avoid risky procedures.

3D guilded implants also greatly reduces the time needed to finish the procedures by allowing us to plan out every step of the implant procedure well before starting. These include the size of the implant, how deep it must be planted, where it needs to be placed, which implant does the patient prefer and many more!

How Dental Implants Work?

Dental implants sounds complicated but in reality it is fairly easy. Everything is done in office, except for creation of the implant itself. Consultation to installing the implants is all done in house to make it consistent and easy to keep track of.

It all starts with the first evaluation. This appointment is usually to determine if your mouth will able to support dental implants. To do this, we get a 3D scan of your tooth, combined with another x-ray called CEPH to examine your mouth and jaw.

The most common problem for the lack of support in your mouth is bone loss. This can be due to many factors such as facial trauma, periodontal disease, dentures, and many others. For simple cases a bone graft is given to provide ample support for the implant to anchor to. An analogy to this is filling up a hole to provide foundation for a new tree. Without it the tree will be lose and potentially in danger of falling down. Without enough support it is possible for your implants to fall out as well!!!

An Implant without bone for support is like a tree without soil to root in!!

Once we determine that you're jaw is suitable for dental implants, we start the implant process. Using the 3D scan and CEPH x-ray, Dr. Ge will determine where the implant(s) will need to be placed and plan accordingly.  The end goal of an implant is always to optimize the comfort and function of your mouth, so finding the ideal tooth position is ideal and crucial to implant success. Dr. Ge will use digital implant software to design your implants digitally first to ensure perfect placement.

After the design is completed, Dr. Ge will start the implant procedure to install the dental implant(s). Dr. Ge's experience helps her craft the perfect implant treatment plan. This will ensure that the implant is planted at the correct depth and place. This will ensure a firm, sturdy implant that will last a long time.

Once the implant is placed in your mouth, we proceed to the waiting phase. Sounds boring but it is a necessary step to allow the implant to heal before moving forward. Usually a temporary tooth will be put there so that you aren't walking around with a missing tooth! Typically, this healing period lasts 3-4 months but this varies based on your personal healing factor.

Lastly, when the area is all healed up, the custom abutment is installed which is placed on top of the implant. The abutment serves to house the crown on top which will give the implant its natural look. Now your implant is complete and you can show off that brand new smile!

Dental Implant needs to be cared for like your other teeth. Routine flossing and brushing will help to keep the gums and bone healthy, which will help you maintain that confident smile. The dental implant will look indistinguishable from other teeth so you can freely smile without fear of a bad photo or two!
